Stealth Online Invaders

With the availability of the Internet, our world has become borderless with tremendous impact in our day-to-day life. It is a boon that helps people to communicate to each other, update themselves to current technologies, avail many online services such as banking and many more. But, as the saying goes, "Behind every silver lining ...” internet has a dark side too. Internet users are highly vulnerable to malwares and the computers connected in internet are at the constant risk of being infected by adware and spyware programs.

The worst part of these malwares (adware and spywares) is that they enter the computer unknown to user and operate inside it covertly. Presence of adware or spyware cause pop up ads to displayed irrelevantly in the system and the user will not have any control over these unsolicited pop ups. Spyware and adware are integrated part of some freeware programs and unsuspecting users who download such freewares fall a prey to them. Sometimes, even visiting a website risks the user’s computer to infection. However, adware and spyware do not stop with just displaying pop up ads. They can do virtually anything and everything in your computer, when properly programmed.

Spywares when treated malwares can be used for a wide range of criminal activities. Some of them are

  •       Scanning through user’s hard disk files without the knowledge of user himself
  •      Stealing passwords, credit card numbers and other confidential data
  •     Logging user’s browsing habits

Spywares log keystrokes of the user to steal passwords, credit card numbers etc. This information can be used by third parties for identity theft, causing unnecessary trouble to user costing him/her both money and peace. Hence, every internet user has to protect his system from these internet woes.

Does your computer display unsolicited pop ups? Are you not able to control these suspicious pop ups? Do you notice a sudden drop in your computer’s performance without any obvious reason? If the answer is ‘yes’, then its time to wake up!!! Your system may be infected with one or more spywares. The drop you notice in your system’s performance may be due to the spyware(s) using your system resources.

How to protect my computer from spywares? The best way to protect your computer from spywares is to install an anti spyware which scans the system for spywares and removes them if its finds any. A good anti spyware will also prevent further infections in the computer. It is always best to choose such an anti spyware which will not only remove the already installed spywares but also prevent new ones from entering the system.

Spywares do not run independently of the applications in which they are integrated. Hence, the anti spyware which removes the spywares invariably removes the application too. This also means that, the other infected applications which are otherwise benign are also flushed off. To avoid this havoc, the anti spyware when installed in a system blocks the installation of programs infected with spyware.

Last but not least, it is equally important for the user to read the End User License Agreement (EULA), when he/she proceeds with a software installation. This is because, as said before, adware and spyware come as a part of some freeware and shareware and by reading the EULA the user can learn about them.
