The Basics of adware and spyware

Though spyware and adware programs appear similar, they actually are not. It is remarkable how often these two coincide.

Many people think that spyware is just an advertising software which displays pop ups and advertisements when a website is opened. Hence, a common misunderstanding prevails that spyware is just another term that is used to refer to adware. Web experts say that spyware is much more.

Let us gain some insight about spyware and adware in this article.

Spyware is a software whose purpose is to collect usage information from your computer, usually for advertising purposes. It 'sneaks' onto the system or performs other activities hidden to the user.

Spyware and adware are bundled with freeware and shareware, hence gain free access into your system. They display pop up ads whenever the free applications are run. This can be very annoying particularly when the user is in hurry.

Supporters of adware and spyware argue that spyware and adware which are considered to be annoying generate income for developers of freeware and shareware, and also make product ads available to consumers without cost. They provide a legitimate alternative to paying for the software. Users who don’t want the pop ups to be displayed can pay licensing fee for the software or can pay a regular fee for the same.

The downside of spyware is that does more than just displaying pop up ads. It monitors your surfing habits and chatting logs. It even keeps track of information like how long you are online, how many times you open your e-mail etc. However, a spyware is not limited to these activities alone. It can be programmed to do virtually anything in your computer. Since, spyware runs in background without the knowledge of the user, all its activities are hidden.

Spywares were originally intended to help parents and business people to keep track of surfing habits of their children and employees respectively. They also help companies to display their ads and in turn help developers to meet their costs. Hence spywares are beneficial is such contexts and not illegal, in spite of the privacy issues.

There are areas in which people value their privacy. It goes without saying that spywares are objected by such people. Hence they are given the option to refuse the software.

Spywares are prevalent all over the web and virtually there is no way one can avoid them. This is because we can avoid spywares only by not downloading softwares from internet and visiting sites only we authorize.

The best practice is to visit only those sites that have good reputation or those which have anti spyware programs installed in them. By this, we can avoid both spywares and adwares to enter into our computer
