The Risks Posed By Adware and Spyware

Why I am not able to log into my account? Why my friends are abusing me for receiving a mail that I have not sent at all? Why I am getting so many pop ups in my browser? Are these questions flushing out your gray matter? Then your system is badly affected through adware and spyware. Adware and spyware are here in your system to sap the remaining life out of your productivity and privacy.

Adware is a software that displays advertisements on your computer that is considered a legitimate alternative offered to consumers who do not wish to pay for software. Spyware is a tracking program that once gets inside your computer, starts gathering information from your system and relays it to interested parties without your consent.

Spyware is the tool for most of the cyber crimes including password theft, stealing credit card numbers, illegitimate gathering of information about someone’s properties, identity theft etc. It should be noted that adwares are potential spywares. They pose a threat to computer security by covertly downloading advertisement contents, disseminating information causing “identity theft”, creating a nuisance in network traffic etc.

How do adware and spyware get into computer? Adware comes as a freeware and is legitimate. It is automatically loaded with the website or usually integrated into free applications as a way to generate revenue. Some adware track your surfing habits in order to serve ads related to you and when it becomes such intrusive it is called as spyware. This vulnerability of adware poses a serious threat to your computer security. Unlike adwares, spywares are not legitimate. They are deceptive and gets into your computer  disguise as an adware. But they covertly invade your system and read your confidential information and to communicate it to advertisers or to other interested parties.

Some third parties who constantly watch out for such network interference intercept these communication channels.

In U.S the crime rate of “identity theft” is growing. Identity theft of personal properties of the victims takes place through the process of transfer of ownership to a wrong person because of stolen Credit Card numbers, passwords, etc. Again this information are robbed by the spyware and sent through the internet.

The adwares which catch hold of confidential information (such as finance records, payment details) about the owner of the computer communicates it to the third party. Sometimes this covert communication along with the adware goes undetected. By the time, when the anti virus discovers the stealth, irrevocable changes would have occurred and the web traffic of the user would already be diverted from the actual website. There are also anti virus which are immune than many others. But they are available only at an extra expense.

Spyware is software that is used for PC espionage to secretly monitor activities such as chatting. It could also choke the web traffic which is a serious threat to e-commerce. Spyware comes up as “drive –in” downloads , pop up windows with buttons which when clicked displays pornographic contents and infect your computer. Adware companies feel bias about spyware. The reason is this. Although, these companies had already disclosed specific data collections and transmissions on account of privacy and security, they can't totally control the chances of any outgoing data, where, and to whom it might be sent.  The worst part of spyware technology is that it not only relays user’s personal information but also allow the softwares to be installed in the computer without user’s consent via the communication channel the spyware has opened.

The adverse effect of adware is the fact that it has the potential to take the form of a spyware. This often happens when user consents the adware to track his surfing habits etc. and another user interacts with the adware for the information it has tracked. So whenever you want to install software, install one with adware and spyware free. Not all the softwares you install are benign.
